Say it Louder: How Voice Notes and Affirmations Can Help Build Self- Love and Confidence

Some of us grew up being affirmed by our family that led to increased self-love and confidence, however those of us who did not experience that had to develop it on our own. It is one of the foundational pieces we need to build our own versions of a successful, fulfilling life. So when self- love and confidence is missing, we miss out on key opportunities to advance in our careers, lead our families, earn top dollar, rejuvenate ourselves, and build the lives of our dreams.

I was watching a webinar by a business coach some time ago, and she mentioned that part of coaching involves building the right mindset. She evens spends time daily doing her own affirmations, which isn’t surprising to someone like me- but what was surprising is that she said she does voice notes. Once I heard that- I immediately had to write it down to look into and get more details.

Here’s her hack: She simply records her own voice doing her own affirmations and plays them at home or while in the car.

I thought it was sooooo interesting, because I believe the process of hearing your own voice affirming you is really powerful. Of course, you hear your own voice while doing affirmations, but hearing your pre-recorded voice means you don’t even have to be actively listening to it for it to still be absorbed. You can just play it in the background and your brain can still pick it up and process it.

Internalizing positive messages via your own voice should be more impactful because of it’s familiarity. I’d imagine it would be extremely helpful to play when you need to remind yourself of who you really are or who you want to become particularly in times of discomfort, discontent or distress. Recording affirmations in advance for future use gives you easy access during times of need. To make sure we’re clear about the types of messages that would be helpful to us as voice notes, let’s go over some details.

Affirmations are positive messages used when one is trying to strengthen oneself via self talk. They typically start with “I am” or “I have” and are followed by a description, condition, or trait that one determines is impactful to them specifically.

A helpful way to develop one is to ask yourself “what do I want to be/embody”, “what do I want to have”, or “what do I want to accomplish”.

Here’s some examples: I am deserving of all the good things that are happening to me. I have all that I need to get everything I want. I am the first millionaire in my family. Instead of using affirmations per se, you can record a pep talk full of inspiring words for yourself. You could also rattle off accomplishments, if you choose. The key point is recording something that will be influential when you listen to it at a later date.

You should record these notes using a calm and soothing voice or a forceful, confident voice depending on the vibe you are going for. You can use any app on your phone that lets you record and save. You could also leave it as a voicemail for yourself. Consider adding background music. Also, it can’t hurt to email it yourself so you’ll have email access to it if need be.

How often should you listen to them?

Depending on your needs and the purpose of the voice note in your life you may want to listen weekly, daily or multiple times a day. They can be easily incorporated into your daily life i.e listen while getting ready, commuting, or when getting ready for bed. The goal is to listen to them consistently, so you begin to internalize them.

I’ve recorded my own, and I enjoyed the process. I’m actually thinking about adding music to mine and making it longer. I’d love to do it as a mix-tape or playlist type of thing. Would love to hear about your ideas for your own voice notes- please share in the comments!
